Why Twain Harte Yards Are a Different Job

Down in Sonora, a yard cleanup is mostly oak leaves and grass. Up in Twain Harte it is pine needles, and pine needles do not quit. Ponderosas, sugar pines, and cedars drop them all year, with a big push in late summer and fall. They pile up in mats on the ground, slide off the roof into drifts against the house, and pack into the gutters and the deck boards.

Then the snow comes and buries all of it until April. Whatever you did not clear in the fall is still there in spring, wet, heavy, and matted, right when CAL FIRE starts looking at defensible space again.

Add the fact that half the homes in Twain Harte, Mi-Wuk Village, and Sugar Pine are cabins people only see on weekends, and you get a lot of yards that are a year or two behind. That is the job we do more than any other up here.

What a Twain Harte Yard Cleanup Includes

You tell us what is bugging you. We handle whatever the lot needs. A typical job up the hill covers some mix of:

  • Pine needles and cones raked off the ground, blown off the deck, and cleared from around the foundation
  • Leaves from the oaks and dogwoods mixed in with the needles
  • Downed limbs and branches from the last storm, cut up and hauled
  • Brush and overgrowth along the fence, the driveway, and under the trees
  • Weeds and tall grass cut down to the 4 inches CAL FIRE wants
  • The junk pile behind the shed, old firewood racks, a broken picnic table, whatever you point at
  • Gutters as an add-on, since they are full of the same needles

Everything gets loaded on our trailers and hauled to the transfer station the same day. No piles left at the road, no dump run on your weekend.

What It Costs

Three things set the price: how big the lot is, how thick the needles and leaves are, and whether there is brush or junk mixed in.

  • Small cabin lot, normal needle drop: usually $300 to $500, raked and hauled.
  • Bigger lot or a thick forest floor: $1,000 and up. One customer in Cold Springs had us clear half an acre of built-up needles, and that is a full crew day.
  • Brush, limbs, and junk mixed in: priced on top, by the project, with hauling included.

Dry needles are cheaper than wet ones. Dry stuff can be blown and loaded fast. Wet, packed needles have to be raked by hand and weigh more at the dump. If you call before the first storm, the job goes quicker and costs less.

We price by the project, not by the hour, so you know the number before we start. Estimates are free. Request one online or call (209) 215-5355.

From a Twain Harte customer: "I called him for an estimate, he came the next day and two days later the job was completed! I highly recommend anyone needing yard cleanup done to call him, promise you won't regret it!" That is how we try to run every job up the hill.

When to Do It

Fall: Before the First Snow

This is the big one. Get the needles off the ground, roof, and deck in October or November, before the snow seals them in. A clean lot going into winter means less rot under the snow, fewer slippery spots on the walkway, and nothing for the spring melt to turn into a wet mat.

Late Spring: After the Melt, Before Inspections

Once the snow is gone, whatever fell over winter is sitting there. CAL FIRE inspections in Tuolumne County pick up in late spring and summer, and dead needles inside 30 feet of the house are the first thing an inspector notices. Our Twain Harte defensible space page covers what high-country lots need to pass.

Heavy Tree Cover: A Third Pass

Homes tucked under big pines sometimes need a mid-summer pass too. It is a smaller job if the fall and spring cleanups were done.

Cabin Owners: You Do Not Have to Be There

Most of our Twain Harte customers live in the Bay Area or the valley and come up on weekends. Here is how that works:

  • Send us the address and a few photos, or we swing by and look ourselves.
  • You get a flat price by phone or text.
  • We do the work on a weekday while the cabin is empty.
  • You get before-and-after photos the same day, so you know exactly what you paid for.

Short-term rental owners: tell us your turnover days and we will keep the lot clean between guests. The same crew handles snow removal in Twain Harte and Arnold once winter hits, so one phone number covers the whole year.

Seniors and Anyone Who Cannot Do the Raking Anymore

A lot of calls up here come from folks who did their own yard for 30 years and cannot anymore, or from their kids. We do the whole thing: raking, cutting, loading, hauling, and the gutters if you want. If money is the issue, there are county and Fire Safe Council programs that pay for defensible space work for seniors and lower-income homeowners. Our guide on how to get free defensible space in Tuolumne County explains how to apply.

How It Works

  1. Call or send the form. We answer the phone, first ring.
  2. Free estimate. On site or from photos. One flat price, hauling included.
  3. We show up when we say we will. Usually within a few days of your yes.
  4. We rake, cut, load, and haul. Then we send photos.

We cover Twain Harte, Mi-Wuk Village, Sugar Pine, Cold Springs, Long Barn, and up Highway 108 to Pinecrest, plus Sonora, Columbia, and the rest of Tuolumne County. If the gutters are part of the problem, our guide on when to clean gutters in Tuolumne County has the high-country schedule. If there is a junk pile too, our junk removal and hauling service takes it in the same trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does yard cleanup cost in Twain Harte?

A small cabin lot with a normal needle drop usually runs $300 to $500 raked and hauled. Larger lots with a thick forest floor, or brush mixed in, run $1,000 and up. Hauling is included. Every estimate is free.

When should pine needles be cleaned up?

Twice a year works for most lots: fall before the first snow, and late spring after the melt and before inspections. Homes under heavy tree cover sometimes need a third pass in summer.

Can you clean up my cabin while I am not there?

Yes. Most of our Twain Harte customers are weekend owners. We quote from photos or a drive-by, do the work on a weekday, and send before-and-after photos when it is done.

Do you haul everything away?

Yes. Needles, leaves, brush, limbs, and any junk you point at get loaded and hauled the same day. Nothing is left at the curb.
