How to Get Free Defensible Space in Tuolumne County
If you are a senior, disabled, or lower-income homeowner, you may be able to get your defensible space cleared for free. Here is how the program works and how to apply.
What Is Defensible Space?
Defensible space is the cleared area around your home and any other buildings on your land. That includes an ADU, a shop, a shed, or an outhouse. The point is fire protection. When a wildfire comes through, that cleared space slows the flames down and gives firefighters room to work.
The most important part is right next to your house. If brush, weeds, or branches are touching your home, that is a problem. It all needs to be cut down to the ground and cleared back at least 30 feet from the structure. That first 30 feet is your first zone, and it matters most.

Yes, You Can Get It Done for Free
Here is the part most people do not know. There is a way to get your defensible space cleared at no cost to you. You just have to meet a few rules to qualify.
The program is run by the Tuolumne County Fire Safe Council. It is paid for by a CAL FIRE grant, so the money is already set aside. The grant runs from 2024 through 2029. If you fit the program, they send a crew to do the work and you pay nothing.
Who it is for: This program is built for people who cannot do the work themselves or pay someone to do it. That means seniors, disabled residents, and lower-income homeowners.
Do You Qualify?
You may qualify if either of these fits you:
- You are 65 or older and lower-income. There are income limits based on how many people live in your home.
- You are disabled and cannot do the work yourself.
The work also has to be around your main home where you actually live. It is not for empty lots or bare acreage.

What the Program Covers
The crew does the hands-on defensible space work around your home, up to 100 feet out or to your property line. That includes:
- Raking up pine needles and leaves
- Weed eating tall grass and weeds
- Cutting and hauling away brush and bushes too close to the house
- Limbing up trees so a ground fire cannot climb into them
- Removing small trees up to 12 inches thick
What It Does Not Cover
The program is only for defensible space. It will not pay for:
- Clearing big acreage or empty vacant lots
- Regular yard upkeep like mowing the lawn
- General cleanup that is not about fire safety
How the Process Works
It is simple, and the Fire Safe Council walks you through it. Here is the path from start to finish.
- Fill out the application. You start by filling out a form on the Tuolumne County Fire Safe Council website, or by calling them.
- They check if you qualify. The Fire Safe Council reviews your application against the program rules.
- Someone comes out to look. A project manager visits your property to see the work that needs doing. You need to be there and sign a simple landowner agreement.
- The work gets approved and scheduled. If you qualify and the work fits the grant, a licensed crew is lined up. CAL FIRE and the Fire Safe Council contract the job out to a local crew like us. We do one quick site visit, then schedule your work, usually within the next couple of weeks.

Do not stop just because a sign-up date has passed or the program looks full. These grants are usually first come, first served. But money is often left over after the first round of applicants, and that money goes to the next people on the list.
