Case Study: Defensible Space for Senior & Disabled Residents

Tuolumne County Fire Safe Council with TCRCD 2026

The Tuolumne County Fire Safe Council had a batch of approved applications and a firm grant deadline. They needed a contractor who could turn those applications into completed, fully documented defensible space work for senior and disabled homeowners.

We walked every property, provided one itemized estimate for the full batch, and scheduled the work directly with each resident. Our crews cleared brush, dry grass, and ladder fuels through the 100 foot defensible space zone, then chipped and hauled away the debris. Every property was completed on time, with photos and records for the grant file.

What the Council received

  • Every approved property finished, none dropped or deferred
  • One point of contact from site walk to final invoice
  • Before and after photos for every property, organized by address

Built for the Jobs Between the Homeowner and the Masticator

Big iron outfits chase the 300 acre mastication contracts. Solo operators cannot handle a 30 property batch. We live in the middle: hand crews, chippers, and tight scheduling for projects from a single street to roughly 100 acres, and property batches from 20 to 100 homes.

If your project needs heavy mastication across hundreds of acres, we will tell you straight and step aside. If it needs a reliable crew that shows up, works carefully around residents, and documents everything, that is exactly what we are built for.

What Makes Us Easy to Work With

The two things coordinators tell us go wrong most: residents and paperwork. We can take both off your desk, as long as it fits your rules and how you like to run your program.

Fast mobilization

Fast, never sloppy. We run an efficient crew, so if you need us out this week, we make ourselves available. Anything tied to fire safety jumps the line, you come first. When a job has to happen in the next 24 hours, chances are we can make it happen.

Documentation your grant reporting needs

Before and after photos for every property, organized by address and delivered as one package. We track everything: what day each job ran, the time we arrived and left, which crew was on it, and who was on that crew.

Resident contact, handled your way

Some programs want us to schedule and manage residents from start to finish. Others prefer to keep that contact in house and simply hand us the property list. We are set up for both, and we will follow whichever approach works best for your program.

Proof of our work and quality

500+ properties served in 2026 and a 5.0 star rating. Public reviews, before and after photos, and a documented track record you can put in front of your board. The quality shows across every job, so when our truck pulls up, your applicants are not opening the door to a stranger.

We Adapt to Your Workflow

We have seen all kinds of setups work. Pick the one that fits your program, and we will fill the gaps.

We Handle Everything

You hand us the list

  • We schedule directly with each resident
  • We walk, quote, and complete every property
  • Your office gets progress updates, not phone calls

You Keep Control

We work only through your office

  • You handle all resident contact
  • You set the schedule, we complete the work
  • We report back to you after every property

Mix and Match

Built around your program

  • Walk the properties with us, or send us on our own
  • Split the scheduling however works best
  • Add any documentation your grant requires

Every setup comes with before and after photos and complete job records for your grant file, and we can talk through what has worked for other programs on the first call.

How It Works

Four steps from an approved application to a closed out grant file.

STEP 1

Set up a call or meeting

We get on a call or meet in person to talk through the project details and what the grant needs to accomplish.

STEP 2

We walk it and quote it

Site visits and a written, formal estimate, typically within 48 hours.

STEP 3

Schedule the jobs

Once you have handled client contact on your side, we set up a schedule to complete the jobs the following week.

STEP 4

Execute and document completed work

We complete the work and deliver final documentation: before and after photos, plus any further documentation each individual job requires.

Meet the Owners

We take the work seriously, not ourselves. Every job gets done right, on time, and documented down to the last photo. But spend a day with our crew and you will hear plenty of laughs and at least one terrible joke. The name is Wacky Weedeating. We had to live up to it somehow.

Levi Cones, owner of Wacky Weedeating

Levi Cones

Owner, Field Operations

Levi founded Wacky Weedeating in 2024 and runs the field side of the company. He manages several crews, makes sure every job gets finished right, and makes sure every client is happy before we call it done. Our 5.0 star rating and every review behind it come from the work he and his crews deliver.

Vazul Hites, owner of Wacky Weedeating

Vazul Hites

Owner, Sales & Contracts

Vazul handles sales, marketing, and contracts. He sets up every job and keeps the company's internal processes organized, so records, photos, and reporting land on your desk on time. He works on the business while Levi works in the business, and he is your point of contact from the first conversation through the final invoice.

Questions Coordinators Ask

Yes, that is our lane. We itemize the quote property by property, with a detailed breakdown and full explanation of what is included for each one, then sequence properties by geography and send your office a completion report as work progresses.
Certificates of general liability insurance with your organization named as additional insured, issued before work begins.
Send us the requirements in your grant agreement and we will confirm compliance before we quote. We would rather sort that out on day one than on invoice day.
Yes. Program references from completed Fire Safe Council and RCD contract work, plus 66 five star reviews from property owners across two counties.
Site walks usually within 48 hours. Compressed timelines for expiring grant funds are something we plan for, not panic about.
Yes. Zone based clearance through the 100 foot defensible space, following the assessment checklist your program provides for each property.
Yes. Send your RFP, RFQ, or bid invitation to wackyweedeating@gmail.com, and add us to your contractor and bidder lists. We respond with references, proof of insurance, and every document your solicitation requires.
Our council and RCD contract work is grant funded. If your project runs on a CAL FIRE Wildfire Prevention Grant, Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) implementation funding, a Firewise USA community project, or county pass-through dollars, send us the grant requirements and we will build the documentation around them.
