The rule for our area is at least twice a year, and the timing matters more than the number.
Late fall, after leaf drop. This is the big one. The oaks around Sonora, Jamestown, and Columbia drop most of their leaves from late October into November. Clean too early and the trees refill your gutters two weeks later, so wait until they're mostly bare. But don't wait past the first big storm, because that's exactly when a clogged gutter does its damage. The sweet spot is usually November. Spring, before fire season. Winter storms load gutters with needles, twigs, and grit. A spring cleaning clears out what winter left behind, and it removes something most people don't think about: a gutter full of bone-dry pine needles is ember fuel sitting at the edge of your roof. The pine exception. If your house sits under heavy pine coverage in Twain Harte, Mi-Wuk Village, Sugar Pine, or Arnold, twice a year often isn't enough. Pines shed needles year-round, and mountain roofs collect them in drifts. Many cabin owners up there add a third cleaning before the snow, which pairs naturally with getting on a winter snow removal list.
What Clogged Gutters Actually Do
A gutter's whole job is moving water away from the house. When it clogs, the water goes wherever it wants instead. It overflows next to the foundation, and over a few winters that's how crawl spaces flood and slabs crack. It soaks the fascia boards the gutters hang from until they rot and the gutter starts pulling away from the roof. At elevation, trapped water freezes into ice dams that force melting snow up under the shingles. And in summer, that same packed debris turns from a water problem into a fire problem.
None of these show up right away. That's the trap. Skipping a $200 problem for two years is how people end up with a $5,000 one.
What Gutter Cleaning Costs
There's no flat price, because no two houses are the same. What moves the number: whether the house is single-story or two-story, how steep and high the roof is, how packed the gutters are, whether the downspouts are clogged too, and how much total gutter the house has. A small single-story with light leaf buildup is on the low end. A tall house under pines with downspouts that haven't flowed in a year costs more.

Should You Do It Yourself?
Honestly, on a single-story house with a sturdy ladder and a second person to hold it, cleaning your own gutters is a fair Saturday job. Scoop, bag, then run the hose to check the downspouts flow.
Where we'd tell you to stop is anything two-story, any steep or metal roof, and any roof with snow country pitch. Ladder falls put more homeowners in the hospital than just about any other home project, and wet needles on a metal roof are as slick as ice. If getting up there gives you pause, that's the sign to make a call instead.
And if you're over 60, please think twice before climbing at all. Every year we get calls from folks asking us to come finish their gutters because they fell off the ladder or the roof trying to do it themselves. Some of them call with an arm already in a cast.
